Advanced Design - Project Proposal

Companies come up with great logos. I want to be the one who can make fun of it. It takes a creative mind to come up with parodies of famous companies. To get a good logo parody to work, the parody must be clever enough to avoid a likelihood of confusion. That’s why is is smart to use really well know companies like for example fortune 500 companies are so easy to use, because everyone knows them so everyone get it.

I want to light-heartedly mock these companies that take so much away from us and give a little back their way. I will make around 40+ logos parodies that I feel and powerful and impactful. I want to make t-shirts, stickers, and posters. I would even like to have pictures of my t-shirts on models, and then display that as like an ad in a newspaper or magazine. Also to make a flash based photo gallery.

The use of parody to reflect current and historical issues in a society, or in the world for that matter, is nothing new. This practice dates back to the ancient Greeks, namely Aristophanes, who parodied the dramatic writing styles of Aeschylus and Euripides, and the ancient Romans, who used satire to criticize the vices and problems of everyday life– much like we do today.

In a way doing a parody is a defense to trademark infringement. The defense is that there is no likelihood of confusion because the parody will not be taken seriously. While it must initially bring to mind the original, it must be clever enough to be clear that it is not the original nor connected with the original, but a parody must be a humorous take-off or spin-off on the original.

  1. Promising project idea/plan! Maybe sketch out as many ideas as fast as you can early on? Then you can filter things out and keep the best for final selection/refined development. Also, maybe apply your designed materials to other low cost products in addition to t-shirt to disseminate your design?

  2. This sounds like a fun and challenging project, I'm excited to see what you'll come up with for these companies. I also thing shirts are a great way to show your designs.

  3. Great way to visually voice an opinion. I like that you are adding the humor aspect, and think that t-shirts are the perfect way to go. Bumper stickers might also be a good addition to your project.

  4. Or Trucker hats, maybe one or two, i agree, would be cool seeing your designs on something else other than shirts.

  5. maybe something you could do to add another element to this project is to make stickers/bumper stickers and place them in the stores/companies that you are poking fun at.....like if you did something about Target maybe go put your stickers all over Target because then it reaches the audience you are aiming at.

  6. it would also be great/cheeky, if you could incorporate your parodies into its real life environment, meaning making people look twice if they saw your re-done starbucks logo cup sitting in starbucks. (photo document)

  7. which companies you pick are really going to make or break the project look out for contradicting yourself through making fun of opposing companies.

  8. I really like this. How you present your logos is going to be the most interesting part. I saw recently this company that makes stick on coozies for pepsi cans that have logo parodies printed on them, along with "nutrition facts" that also have this same sense of humor.

  9. This will be really awesome when it's done... but you're going to have to go through tons of ideas to meet your goal. I really can't wait to see this finished project.
